More Unreleased Steely Dan Outtakes

We thought we knew pretty much everything there was to know about Steely Dan.

We knew about the long-lost Gaucho track "The Second Arrangement" and wrote about it in this post

But we had no idea there were a whole bunch of unreleased songs recorded during those sessions.

Gaucho was famously difficult to make. There were mishaps during its recording, like Walter Becker getting hit by a car. Plus, they wrangled with their record company over the price of the album.

In the end it took more than a year to complete, and the difficulties during its recording probably led to the extended break Steely Dan took after its release.

Donald and Walter tried and eventually rejected a number of tunes for Gaucho. They must not have been satisfied with them, but they sound pretty good to our ears!

One of the cool ones is "Kulee Baba" (whatever that means!). Check it out:

Here's another cool one called "Kind Spirit."

And one called "The Bear"

For more details on these outtakes and other Steely Dan history, see this excellent article on BB Chronicles.

WYSIWYG - I am a big fan of Steely Dan - In my view they are largely responsible for the music we now call Smooth Jazz. This is not to discount the great musicians of this genra, just to say Steely Dan brought the embellished chord into the maintream of rock and roll and most of today's smooth jazz stars all have rock and roll backgrounds. I plan to play the Bear on my next show (tuesday 9/13 - 7-9pm Eastern, along with a cut from a band you might know: Gooseneck.

The Bear. Classic Dan - the story tellers of the dark, shadowy, cryptic, melancholically tinged messages crisscrossing and blurring the boundaries between pop, rock, soul and jazz.

I see why they were out takes. Of the three, The Bear is the best, but they all were recycled riffs. I recognize several song incrementals in all of them...I enjoyed listening! Thanx for sharing, I look forward to hearing more!

All 3 songs are cool...........my fav is Kind Spirit.......but Bear is a close second.........when you hear the "quality" of these tunes, it's hard to imagine how they decide which ones to cut from a project.....amazing artists.

All these cut are great. I like 'The Bear' probably the best, but all sound really good. I know Donald and Walter were always ultimate perfectionists. I'm sure they had there reasons for leaving these off of Gaucho, but what ever that reason/reasons were, I respect it.

Anyone else hear a hint of Dave Brubeck in those sweeping extended chords of Kulee Baba? DF giving full rein to his first love - Jazz - perhaps?
